Congress MPs Manish Tewari and Randeep Surjewala have submitted separate notices in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha seeking suspension of business to discuss the escalating conflict in West Asia and its impact on Indias energy security. Tewari called for an urgent debate in the Lok Sabha on the government’s assessment of the situation and the measures being taken to protect India’s interests. Surjewala moved a similar motion in the Rajya Sabha, urging a discussion on how the developments and tensions in West Asia could affect India.
In his notice, Surjewala warned that the situation could influence India’s energy supply chains, strategic ties, economic interests, and the safety of Indian citizens living and working in the region. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar is expected to make a statement in the Lok Sabha on the situation in West Asia as the second phase of the Budget Session begins today. His statement comes amid heightened global attention following the reported killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in joint US and Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28. Iran later launched retaliatory attacks on US military bases in several West Asian countries and Israeli targets across the region.
Congress MP Jairam Ramesh also demanded a full discussion in Parliament on the evolving crisis. In a post on X, he said ministerial statements usually repeat known information and do not allow MPs to ask questions or seek clarifications. The second phase of the Budget Session will continue until April 2, focusing mainly on key legislative business and the Union Budget 2026 to 27. The session began on January 28 with the President’s address to a joint sitting of both Houses and includes 30 sittings over 65 days.
