Chinese authorities have carried out the death penalty on 11 prominent members of the infamous Ming family crime syndicate, known for running a massive online fraud operation based in Myanmar that defrauded victims of over $1.4 billion. The executions, confirmed this week, mark a significant escalation in Beijings campaign against cross-border cybercrime rings targeting Chinese nationals.
A court in China convicted the group, including family leader Ming Guoping and his granddaughter Ming Zhenzhen, on charges ranging from telecom fraud and human trafficking to murder and illegal gambling. Their operations in Myanmars Laukkaing area, near the Chinese border, involved forcing thousands into scam compounds where they were coerced into pig-butchering schemes—fake romantic or investment lures that drained victims savings. The family allegedly trafficked over 100,000 people since 2015, with brutal tactics like armed guards and even killings, including 14 Chinese workers shot during an escape attempt in 2023. State media reported the executions followed a fair trial, emphasizing justice for the victims.
This follows months of heightened enforcement, with China pressuring Myanmar to dismantle these hubs in the Golden Triangle region. Last year saw hundreds extradited and scam centers raided, rescuing thousands amid the areas instability. The move highlights Beijings zero-tolerance policy, blending diplomacy, bounties up to $70,000 for tips, and severe punishments to deter what officials call a scamdemic. Experts note these syndicates thrive on militia alliances and weak borders, but the executions could disrupt their networks. Victims are urged to report suspicious online contacts immediately and enable strong security measures like 2FA to stay safe.
