India’s cruise tourism and maritime sector received a major boost as luxury cruise ship MV Empress arrived at Chennai Port, officially marking the start of a new cruise season featuring 21 scheduled voyages over the next three months. Chennai Port witnessed a record single-day passenger operation, handling nearly 3,600 travellers as 1,800 passengers disembarked and another 1,800 boarded for the next journey. Port officials highlighted that the smooth transition was achieved through careful planning and coordinated efforts, demonstrating Chennai’s growing capacity to manage large-scale cruise operations.
The arrival was celebrated with a traditional welcome ceremony organised by the Chennai Port Authority in partnership with the Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation, offering passengers a glimpse of the state’s culture and hospitality. The reception included tilak ceremonies, floral greetings, refreshments, and a live Carnatic music performance. The cultural programme featured performances by celebrated artists, including veena artist Nithyasree Srinivasan, along with classical percussion groups, creating a memorable welcome experience for passengers arriving in India.
Cruise travellers are being accommodated through Chennai Port’s upgraded cruise terminal at West Quay (WQ-IV), a modern facility spread across more than 4,103 square metres. The terminal is equipped with passenger lounges, integrated customs and immigration facilities, advanced baggage screening systems, HVAC support, and escalators to ensure efficient passenger movement.
Officials said the upgraded terminal strengthens Chennai’s ability to provide international-standard cruise services and positions the city as an important maritime hub connecting India with Southeast Asia. The cruise route will link Chennai with destinations including Sri Lankan ports such as Hambantota, Trincomalee, and Kankesanthurai, along with Indian ports like Visakhapatnam and Puducherry, further expanding Chennai’s role in regional cruise tourism.
