According to an Axios report, CENTCOM Commander Admiral Brad Cooper is expected to brief US President Donald Trump as the US military considers a new set of possible operations in Iran. The developments come amid ongoing tensions following a fragile ceasefire. The proposed plans reportedly include a “short and powerful” series of strikes targeting Iranian infrastructure, aimed at breaking the current deadlock. Another option under discussion involves taking control of the Strait of Hormuz to ensure it remains open for commercial shipping. A further proposal includes a special forces mission to secure Iran’s stockpile of highly enriched uranium. Joint Chiefs Chairman General Dan Caine is also expected to participate in the briefing, sources told Axios.
In a separate interview with Axios, Trump suggested that the current naval blockade against Iran remains a key pressure tool, stating it is highly effective and intended to force Tehran to negotiate. He rejected Iran’s idea of reopening the Strait of Hormuz and easing the blockade before talks on its nuclear program, insisting that US concerns must be addressed first.
The report also notes that Trump has not ruled out military action if Iran refuses to engage in negotiations. Meanwhile, a think tank analysis by the Institute for the Study of War indicates that Iran is unlikely to compromise on control of the Strait of Hormuz or its nuclear program. It suggests that hardline positions within Iran’s leadership are gaining dominance, with limited internal opposition.
The analysis further claims that Iran may be trying to reframe its stance by involving Oman in a proposal to manage shipping tolls through the Strait, allowing it to present a revised offer without crossing its core red lines. Trump described the US naval blockade as “genius,” claiming it is fully effective and highlights American naval strength. He reiterated that Iran must abandon its nuclear ambitions for any potential agreement, emphasizing continued US military superiority.
