The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued a weather advisory warning that Mumbai and its surrounding suburbs are likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall through Thursday night and into Friday morning. The civic body has also cautioned that a few areas could receive extremely heavy downpours during this period. Along with intense rainfall, wind speeds of around 50 to 60 kmph are expected to sweep across parts of the city, raising concerns about possible disruptions.
The BMC has also released details of the tidal schedule, stating that a high tide is expected at 1:45 pm on Thursday, followed by another at 1:31 am on Friday. Low tides are forecast for 7:49 pm on Thursday and 7:11 am on Friday. Officials often monitor tidal conditions closely during heavy rain, as high tides can slow the drainage of rainwater and worsen flooding in low-lying areas.
Rainfall figures shared by the civic body show that Mumbai received significant precipitation over the previous 24 hours. Between 8 am on July 1 and 8 am on July 2, the city recorded an average of 172 mm of rainfall. The eastern suburbs were the wettest, registering 189 mm, while the western suburbs received an average of 165 mm. The relentless showers led to widespread waterlogging across several parts of Mumbai, severely affecting traffic movement and daily activities. Areas including Andheri, Navi Mumbai, Kurla East, SG Barve Road, Sindhi Society, Chembur, Kings Circle, and Gandhi Market reported flooded roads, causing inconvenience to commuters and motorists.
Rail transport was also impacted, with water accumulating on tracks near Dadar railway station. In addition, services on the Central Railway network were delayed on Thursday morning due to poor visibility caused by persistent rainfall. According to Central Railways Chief Public Relations Officer, train operations have been running behind schedule at multiple locations because weather conditions have reduced visibility for railway staff.
Residents living in flood-prone localities voiced frustration over the recurring problem of waterlogging during every monsoon season. One local resident remarked that even moderate rainfall often results in severe flooding and urged authorities to implement long-term solutions to improve drainage infrastructure. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a nowcast red alert for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, and Raigad districts, warning of moderate to intense spells of rain over isolated locations during the following few hours. The weather department has advised citizens to avoid low-lying and flood-prone areas, stay away from weak structures, trees, and electric poles, and keep track of official weather updates before venturing outdoors as the heavy rain continues.
