A massive fire tore through a crowded bar in Thailands capital late Sunday night, killing at least 27 people and leaving dozens injured in one of Bangkoks deadliest entertainment venue disasters in recent years. Authorities said 22 of the injured remain in critical condition as investigators examine the cause of the blaze and possible safety violations. The fire broke out at the Rong Beer Na Lat Phrao bar in Bangkoks Chatuchak district shortly before midnight. According to officials, flames spread rapidly after smoke was seen near the stage area, triggering panic among patrons. Witnesses reported that the power suddenly went out before an explosion-like sound was heard, leaving the venue engulfed in thick smoke within minutes.
Emergency crews rushed to the scene and managed to bring the fire under control in about half an hour. However, rescue workers encountered a grim scene inside the building, recovering victims from different sections of the bar as they searched through the smoke-filled structure. Officials confirmed that 63 people were taken to hospitals following the incident, with 22 battling life-threatening injuries. Several victims are yet to be formally identified, prompting authorities to establish assistance centers for families searching for missing relatives.
Preliminary findings suggest the fire may have started due to an electrical short circuit near a ceiling-mounted air-conditioning unit or electrical equipment close to the stage. Investigators stressed that the exact cause has not yet been determined and a forensic examination is ongoing. Authorities are also examining reports that emergency exits may have been blocked or difficult to access during the evacuation. Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt said some victims were discovered near the rear of the venue, while others were found in restroom areas where they apparently sought refuge from the smoke and flames.
Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul visited the site in the early hours of Monday and expressed condolences to the families of those who lost their lives. He assured that a thorough investigation would be carried out to determine whether negligence or violations of fire safety regulations contributed to the tragedy.
The incident has once again drawn attention to fire safety standards in Thailands entertainment venues. The country has witnessed several deadly nightclub and pub fires over the years, prompting repeated calls for stricter enforcement of building codes, regular inspections, and improved emergency evacuation measures. Authorities continue to investigate the disaster while hospitals remain focused on treating the critically injured. Officials are expected to release further updates as the identification process and forensic examination progress.
