The suspect in last weekend’s mass shooting at Brown University has been found dead, a US attorney said, as investigators examine whether the same individual may also be responsible for the killing of a Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor two days later. Christina Sterling, a spokesperson for US Attorney Leah Foley in Boston, confirmed the suspect’s death, a statement supported by two other federal officials.
Authorities believe the suspect’s body was discovered inside a storage unit in Salem, New Hampshire, roughly 20 miles north of downtown Boston, after a significant law enforcement presence gathered there Thursday night as part of the Brown University investigation. A Justice Department official, speaking anonymously, said the suspect died by suicide. Officials did not release further details about the suspect’s identification or explain why investigators suspect a connection between the two cases, though federal prosecutors in Massachusetts have prepared charges related to the investigation.
The ongoing search following Saturday’s shooting inside a classroom building at Brown University left students and residents of Providence, Rhode Island, anxious and awaiting an arrest, Mayor Brett Smiley said. The attack killed two students and injured at least eight others.
On Monday, MIT professor Nuno Loureiro, 47, was shot and killed at his home in Brookline, Massachusetts, about 50 miles north of Brown’s campus. Earlier in the week, an FBI official stated that authorities did not believe the two shootings were connected. Loureiro worked in MIT’s nuclear science and engineering and physics departments, as well as its Plasma Science and Fusion Center.
Investigators said the Brown University suspect fled on foot into nearby neighborhoods, leading police to rely heavily on residential security camera footage due to limited surveillance in and around the classroom building. Police released images and videos of a masked man believed to be the shooter, based on witness accounts, and asked the public for help identifying him. The footage showed the suspect walking in a nearby area before and after the attack, including when police arrived.
Providence Police Chief Oscar Perez said authorities initially had no information about the suspect’s identity or motive and warned that the individual could be anywhere. Police also shared images of another unidentified man seen near the scene, describing him as a possible witness. Authorities had briefly taken a person into custody a day after the shooting but later released him after determining he was not involved.
