Chief of the Army Staff (COAS), General Upendra Dwivedi, is currently on a four-day official visit to Bhutan, where he was warmly received by the Royal Bhutan Army upon his arrival in Thimphu. His visit aims to strengthen the long-standing defence partnership between India and Bhutan. On the first day, General Dwivedi was welcomed by Major General Dorji Rinchen, Deputy Chief Operations Officer of the Royal Bhutan Army. He then held an in-depth discussion with Lieutenant General Batoo Tshering, the Chief Operations Officer. These interactions emphasized the strong trust and friendly ties between the two armies.
During his stay, General Dwivedi is scheduled to meet King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and further engage in high-level military discussions to deepen bilateral defence cooperation. In addition, General Dwivedi met with the Indian Ambassador to Bhutan, Sudhakar Dalela, to explore ways to further enhance the close and strategic relationship between the two nations.
The Indian Army shared updates on social media, highlighting the warm reception and productive engagements. The visit underscores the enduring and time-tested relationship between India and Bhutan, rooted in mutual trust and the 1949 Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation, which was updated in 2007. Formal diplomatic ties between the two countries were established in 1968.
