The United States has increased its travel advisories for Bahrain and Qatar to Level 3 following the launch of US military operations in Iran, citing heightened security threats and possible regional disruptions. On February 28, the State Department revised its advisory for Bahrain, authorizing the departure of non-essential US government personnel and their families due to security concerns. The advisory was raised from Level 2 to Level 3 and now advises Americans to reconsider travel to Bahrain because of terrorism and armed conflict.
The department noted that since hostilities between the United States and Iran began on February 28, there has been a continued risk of Iranian drone and missile attacks, along with major disruptions to commercial air travel. It also warned that terrorist groups remain active in Bahrain and could carry out attacks with little or no warning. The State Department elevated Qatar’s travel advisory to Level 3 on March 1, up from Level 1, similarly permitting the departure of non-emergency personnel and their family members over security risks. The updated guidance advises reconsidering travel to Qatar due to the threat of armed conflict.
The advisory cited the same regional tensions, highlighting ongoing risks of drone and missile attacks and interruptions to flights. It also referenced a Federal Aviation Administration notice affecting the region, including Qatar, warning of potential risks to civil aviation stemming from political and military instability. A day earlier, the department had issued a worldwide caution, advising Americans — particularly those in the Middle East — to follow security updates from the nearest US embassy or consulate. The alert warned of possible travel disruptions caused by temporary airspace closures and urged US citizens globally to exercise heightened vigilance.
Both advisories recommend that Americans enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program, stay informed through local media, establish communication plans, and review country-specific security information. Level 3 advisories, labeled “Reconsider Travel,” indicate serious safety and security risks. They are one step below Level 4, the most severe warning, which advises Americans not to travel at all.
