A major political controversy has erupted in Tamil Nadu after the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) alleged that an attempt was made to destabilize Chief Minister Vijays government by luring several of its MLAs with cash offers. The allegations have triggered a sharp exchange between the ruling party and the opposition Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), with both sides accusing each other of political misconduct. The controversy came to light after TVK MLA N. Ilaiyaraja lodged a complaint with the police, claiming he was offered ₹35 crore to vote against the government during an upcoming Assembly proceeding. He further alleged that around 15 TVK legislators were targeted as part of a larger plan to weaken the ruling coalition.
Acting on the complaint, Tamil Nadu Police arrested three individuals in connection with the alleged bribery attempt. Investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding the case and whether the accused were acting independently or as part of a broader conspiracy. Officials have not disclosed all details, stating that the probe is still in its early stages. The ruling TVK has alleged that the conspiracy was aimed at bringing down the Vijay-led government and has claimed that individuals linked to the opposition DMK were involved. Party leaders described the alleged move as an attempt to undermine the mandate given by the people of Tamil Nadu and demanded strict legal action against those responsible.
The DMK has strongly denied the allegations, calling them baseless and politically motivated. Opposition leaders accused the ruling party of trying to divert public attention from governance issues and rejected any suggestion that the party was involved in attempts to poach legislators. The incident has intensified political tensions in the state, with both parties trading allegations of horse-trading and attempts to influence elected representatives. The exchange comes at a time when political rivalry in Tamil Nadu has already been escalating following the formation of the new government.
Police officials have said the investigation is continuing, and more people may be questioned as evidence is examined. Authorities are also verifying the claims made in the complaint before reaching any conclusions. No court has established the allegations at this stage. The developments have once again brought the issue of political defections and alleged attempts to influence legislators into the spotlight. As the investigation progresses, the case is expected to remain at the centre of Tamil Nadus political discourse in the coming days.
