Indian Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi revealed on April 1, 2026, that the Navy was only minutes away from launching a maritime strike against Pakistan during Operation Sindoor, before Islamabad requested a halt to military action. Speaking at a naval investiture ceremony, where two senior officers were awarded the Yudh Seva Medal for their roles in the operation following the Pahalgam terror attack, Admiral Tripathi highlighted the Navy’s high level of preparedness and assertive stance throughout the mission.
He noted that the Navy acted swiftly and decisively, maintaining a strong operational posture that reinforced public confidence in its capabilities. He also mentioned a significant moment when the Prime Minister experienced the Navy’s operational strength during a 17-hour overnight embarkation along the western seaboard.
Addressing the ongoing conflict in West Asia involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, the Navy Chief pointed out its impact on global maritime activity. Over 20 merchant vessels have been attacked, and around 1,900 ships remain stranded. Traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has dropped drastically to just six or seven ships daily, compared to the earlier average of about 130.
He emphasized that oceans are no longer secondary zones affected by land conflicts but have become primary arenas where strategic power is demonstrated, often with far-reaching consequences. Admiral Tripathi further explained that advancements in technology and evolving warfare tactics have made modern conflicts more complex and unpredictable. This requires greater adaptability at the organizational level, operational efficiency at the unit level, and professional excellence from individuals.
He also highlighted the Navy’s role as a regional first responder through humanitarian missions such as Operation Brahma in Myanmar and Operation Sagar Bandhu in Sri Lanka. He underscored the importance of self-reliance, noting that the Navy has transitioned into a “builder’s Navy” and significantly enhanced its capabilities, including the commissioning of 12 ships and submarines within a single year.
