Around 30 Indian nationals have been arrested in the United States for allegedly living in the country without legal authorization while working as commercial truck drivers. US authorities have confirmed that the individuals are expected to face deportation proceedings following their detention. The arrests were made during a federal enforcement operation known as Operation Checkmate, conducted by the US Border Patrol in Arizonas Yuma Sector. According to officials, the operation targeted individuals suspected of violating immigration laws while operating commercial vehicles on American roads.
Authorities said that a total of 52 people were taken into custody during the operation carried out between May 11 and May 15. Among them were 36 individuals found driving semi-trucks, including 30 Indian nationals. The remaining detainees were reportedly citizens of Mexico, El Salvador, and Russia. Investigators found that several of those arrested possessed commercial drivers licenses issued by various US states, while some reportedly did not have valid driving credentials. Officials also stated that many of the detainees were carrying employment authorization documents that were no longer valid under current immigration rules.
US Customs and Border Protection said all those arrested are being processed under federal immigration laws and are expected to be removed from the country. The agency described the operation as part of a broader effort to enforce immigration regulations and ensure compliance within the commercial transportation sector. Acting Chief Patrol Agent Dustin Caudle said the operation was aimed at improving public safety by identifying individuals who were unlawfully present in the country and operating large commercial vehicles. According to officials, such enforcement actions are intended to reduce potential risks on highways and strengthen oversight of commercial transportation activities.
The latest arrests come amid increased scrutiny of undocumented immigrants working in the US trucking industry. In recent months, federal agencies have conducted multiple operations focused on commercial drivers as part of wider immigration enforcement measures. The development is likely to draw attention in India as immigration remains a key issue in US domestic policy. Authorities have not yet released the identities of the detained Indian nationals, and deportation procedures are expected to continue in the coming weeks.
