JMI secures Rs 67 lakh Central govt grant for antimicrobial resistance research

New Delhi, Aug 25 (AHN) The Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) has secured a Central government grant of Rs 67.23 lakh for five years to strengthen biomedical research, scientific training, and capacity building in the critical area of Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR), an official said on Tuesday.

The grant has been awarded under the “Support to Institutions and Scientific Professionals/Bodies/Associations” component of the Human Resource Development (HRD) Scheme of the Department of Health Research (DHR), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, said JMI Chief Public Relations Officer Saima Saeed in a statement.

Under this scheme, DHR supports selected domestic institutions in conducting specialised training programmes for candidates in identified priority areas.

The JMI has been awarded the grant for its proposal titled “Molecular and Multi-Omics Approaches in Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR): Diagnostics to Therapeutics.”

The project's Principal Investigator, Shama Parveen, is a professor at the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Basic Sciences (CIRBSc). Parveen’s research profile encompasses molecular biology, virology, infectious diseases, and translational biomedical research, the statement said.

The grant marks a significant achievement for the University and will substantially strengthen biomedical research, scientific training, and capacity building in the critical area of Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR), the statement said.

The programme will provide specialised training in molecular and multi-omics approaches, encompassing AMR diagnostics, multi-omics approaches, and the development of therapeutic strategies, it said.

The initiative will also contribute to the objectives of the Government of India's Skill India Programme by fostering skilled human resources in an important and rapidly evolving area of biomedical science, it said.

The co-Investigators of the approved proposal are Imtaiyaz Hasan, Asimul Islam, S.N. Kazim and Rajan Patel, from CIRBSc, JMI.

Their collective expertise will further strengthen the programme's interdisciplinary character and facilitate advanced training in AMR research spanning molecular biology, computational approaches and drug discovery, the statement said.
