Gujarat: 187 held after raid on ‘gambling den’ in Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad, Aug 3 (AHN) A total of 187 people have been named as accused after the Gujarat Police's State Monitoring Cell (SMC) raided Manpasand Gymkhana in Ahmedabad's Dariyapur area in an operation targeting an alleged gambling racket, according to a police brief issued on Monday.

The SMC said the operation resulted in the seizure of approximately Rs 3.30 lakh in cash, 176 mobile phones and 29 vehicles. Police identified 187 accused in connection with the case.

No further details regarding the identities of those detained or the specific charges were immediately released in the brief.

The latest action comes against a premises that has repeatedly figured in police operations over the past several years.

Manpasand Gymkhana has previously been raided by the State Monitoring Cell and the Ahmedabad Crime Branch over alleged gambling activities, leading to multiple arrests in earlier cases.

Authorities have also taken action against unauthorised portions of the property's structure following previous investigations.

According to reports, the gymkhana has remained under the scrutiny of law enforcement because of repeated allegations that it was being used to run organised gambling operations.

Previous raids at the same premises have resulted in arrests, seizures of cash, vehicles and electronic devices, while investigations were subsequently transferred to specialised police units in some cases.

The State Monitoring Cell is a specialised wing of the Gujarat Police that conducts statewide operations against offences such as illegal gambling, bootlegging and other organised criminal activities.

The cell frequently undertakes intelligence-based raids independently of local police units.

Police have not yet disclosed the breakdown of the accused, the nature of the alleged gambling operation, or whether additional arrests are expected. Further investigation into the case is underway.
