Israel to Confer Its Highest Civilian Honour on Indian Pilot Smit Machchhar

Israel will honour Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar with its highest civilian award for his bravery during an alleged hijack attempt aboard Flydubai Flight FZ1073 on September 30, 2026. Israeli President Isaac Herzog announced the decision during a ceremony in Jerusalem, praising Machchhar for helping avert a potential disaster. Despite being injured, the captain reportedly managed to open the cockpit door, allowing cabin crew and passengers to restrain the co-pilot. The aircraft subsequently made an emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. Machchhar will receive the award after recovering from his injuries. Separately, US Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi recognised the Indian pilot's courage in a statement submitted to the US Congressional Record, crediting his actions with helping save 172 lives.
