In the harsh terrain of Ladakh, where temperatures drop to minus 40°C and oxygen is scarce, the Military Engineering Service (MES) has transformed a 1960s dusty airstrip into the world-class Leh Air Force Station. Originally a lifeline for India’s northern borders, the airfield faced short runways, fragile surfacing, and extreme weather. In just 21 months, MES engineers extended the runway to over 3,000 metres, built drainage systems, reinforced aprons, and innovated methods to lay asphalt in sub-zero conditions. Collaborating closely with the Indian Air Force and Ladakh administration, the project balanced operational needs with environmental challenges. Today, Leh hosts Su-30MKI squadrons, supports transport and civilian flights, and serves as a hub for medical and disaster relief missions. MES’s use of local labour and materials embodies ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ while strengthening India’s strategic presence along the LAC. From dusty origins to a strategic powerhouse, Leh stands as a testament to innovation, collaboration, and endurance.
