Eleven members of a Myanmar-based criminal syndicate were executed in China.

Eleven members of a Myanmar-based family criminal syndicate were executed in China after their death sentences were approved by the country’s top court. The Wenzhou Intermediate People’s Court in Zhejiang carried out the sentences for crimes including murder, assault, fraud, illegal detention, and running illegal casinos. The syndicate, led by Mg Myin Shaunt Phyin and Ma Thiri Maung, had operated scam operations in Myanmar’s Kokang region since 2015, causing the deaths of 14 Chinese nationals and earning over 10 billion yuan (about USD 1.4 billion) from fraud and gambling. Appeals were rejected, and the Supreme People’s Court confirmed the executions after verifying the evidence and legal procedures.
