Lindsay Clancy’s extremely low body temperature after her reported suicide attempt has emerged as a significant piece of medical evidence in her ongoing trial. Clancy was found seriously injured outside her Massachusetts home in January 2023 after jumping from a second-story window. She was later taken to South Shore Hospital, where doctors recorded her core body temperature at just 82.1°F (27.8°C), a level considered severe hypothermia.

A doctor who reviewed the circumstances explained that the unusually low temperature could have been caused by several factors occurring at the same time. Clancy had been exposed to freezing winter conditions after the fall, and remaining on the cold ground could have caused substantial heat loss. Her serious injuries may also have affected her body's ability to regulate temperature normally.

According to Dr. Sohaib Imtiaz, a combination of cold exposure, spinal trauma, blood loss and shock could have contributed to the dangerously low reading. A severe spinal injury can interfere with the body's automatic responses to cold, making it harder to conserve heat. Another possible factor is known as “afterdrop.” In cases of severe hypothermia, a person's core temperature can sometimes continue to fall as colder blood from the extremities returns to the body's core during changes in circulation and treatment.

The timing of the temperature measurement is therefore important. The 82.1°F reading was taken at the hospital rather than immediately when Clancy was discovered, meaning her body temperature could have changed during the rescue and transportation process. Medical experts have emphasized that the temperature alone cannot establish exactly how long Clancy was exposed to the cold or precisely how her temperature reached such a low level. Instead, it must be considered alongside her injuries, blood loss, environmental conditions and the treatment she received.

Clancy, a former labor and delivery nurse, is accused of killing her three children in January 2023 before attempting to take her own life. Her defense has argued that she was suffering from postpartum psychosis, while prosecutors have disputed aspects of that explanation. As the trial continues, medical testimony about Clancy's physical condition is expected to remain an important part of the case. The 82.1°F temperature provides evidence of profound hypothermia, but its significance will ultimately depend on how it fits with the wider medical and forensic evidence presented in court.
