Ukraine and US delegations meet in Saudi Arabia, US envoy optimistic about ending the war.

KYIV/RIYADH — Ukrainian and US delegations convened on Sunday (March 23) to discuss strategies for protecting energy infrastructure and other critical facilities, Ukraine’s defense minister announced. The discussions are part of US President Donald Trump’s diplomatic initiative to bring an end to the three-year-long war.
The talks took place in Saudi Arabia ahead of scheduled negotiations between US and Russian delegations on Monday. US special envoy Steve Witkoff expressed confidence in the potential for progress, describing the ongoing conflict as Europe's deadliest since World War Two. "I believe (Russian President Vladimir Putin) wants peace," Witkoff stated in an interview with Fox News on Sunday. "I expect to see significant progress during Monday’s discussions in Saudi Arabia, particularly concerning a Black Sea ceasefire for naval operations between the two nations. A broader ceasefire may naturally follow from there."
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy emphasized the constructive nature of Ukraine’s delegation during Sunday’s meeting, highlighting the importance of dialogue and ongoing diplomatic engagement. "The discussions have been quite productive, and our delegations continue their work," Zelenskiy remarked. However, he stressed that regardless of diplomatic efforts, real progress depends on Putin making a definitive decision to halt military strikes.
The negotiations in Saudi Arabia come at a crucial moment in efforts to resolve the conflict, as both sides seek a path toward de-escalation. While diplomatic talks continue, Ukraine remains firm in its position that an end to hostilities requires tangible action from Russia. As tensions persist, the international community closely watches the upcoming US-Russia discussions, hoping they will lead to a breakthrough. Whether the Saudi Arabian talks will set the stage for lasting peace remains to be seen, but optimism is growing that a ceasefire could be within reach.
