US President Donald Trump shared a photograph of India Gate in New Delhi, describing the iconic 1921 war memorial as a “beautiful triumphal arch.” Posting on his social media platform Truth Social, he wrote, “India’s beautiful triumphal arch, ours will be the greatest of all,” emphasizing his vision for a similar structure in Washington, D.C.

Trump has repeatedly expressed his desire for a triumphal arch in the US capital, highlighting that while 57 cities worldwide feature such monuments, Washington remains without one. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, he said he wanted the arch to be the largest, noting, “We’re the biggest, most powerful nation.” He previously indicated that construction could begin within two months, aiming for it to be part of the United States’ 250th anniversary celebrations on July 4, 2026.

Over recent months, Trump has displayed several renderings and scale models of the proposed arch in the Oval Office, including small, medium, and large versions, commenting that the largest design looks the best. The structure’s design is loosely inspired by Paris’s Arc de Triomphe and is planned for the Potomac River area near the Lincoln Memorial.

On January 23, Trump also shared images of three proposed versions, one featuring gold gilding. Historically, triumphal arches date back to ancient Rome, serving as monuments to commemorate military victories, national achievements, or influential figures. Trump’s plan underscores his focus on creating a grand symbol of national pride and historical significance in the US capital.
