At least three people, including prominent tribal elder and Ahmadzai Wazir tribe chief Malik Tariq Wazir, were killed in a deadly improvised explosive device explosion in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, underlining the worsening security situation in the country’s volatile northwest.

The blast took place in the busy Rustam Bazaar area of Wana in Lower South Waziristan when an explosive device planted near Gulshan Plaza detonated as the tribal chief’s vehicle passed through the market. Four others were injured in the attack, with hospital officials saying some victims remain in critical condition.

Police officials said unidentified militants had allegedly planted the explosives during the night before triggering the device in the morning hours. Security forces sealed off the area after the explosion and launched a search operation to trace those responsible.

The killing of Malik Tariq Wazir has sent shockwaves through the tribal region, where he was considered an influential figure involved in jirgas and local peace efforts. Residents and traders reportedly shut businesses after the blast as panic spread across the market area.

The attack once again highlights Pakistan’s deteriorating security environment in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where militant violence and bomb attacks have sharply increased in recent months. The province has witnessed repeated attacks targeting police personnel, tribal elders and civilians despite ongoing military operations and counterterror campaigns.

Analysts warn that the continued targeting of tribal leaders reflects growing instability in former tribal districts bordering Afghanistan. Tribal elders have historically played a key role in mediating disputes and resisting militant influence, making them frequent targets for extremist groups operating in the region.

The latest bombing comes amid broader concerns over Pakistan’s inability to contain militant networks in its northwestern belt. Critics argue that despite repeated claims of successful security operations, attacks in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan continue to expose serious intelligence and governance failures.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the Wana blast, though suspicion is likely to fall on militant factions active in the border region. Authorities have launched an investigation into the attack.
