The United States has officially approved the sale of sustainment support services for India’s AH-64E Apache attack helicopters and M777A2 ultra-light howitzers, with the total package valued at approximately USD 482.2 million. The move further strengthens the growing defence partnership between Washington and New Delhi.

Cleared under the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) framework, the deal focuses on ensuring long-term operational efficiency of these platforms rather than introducing new weapon systems. It includes logistics support, training, technical assistance, and depot-level maintenance to enhance reliability and readiness. According to the Defence Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA), the notifications were published in the Federal Register on 17 June, following prior approval from the US State Department and communication to Congress on 18 May.

India's M777A2 howitzers, deployed to improve artillery capability in high-altitude regions like Ladakh and Arunachal Pradesh, are known for their lightweight design and precision strike capability. The sustainment package for these systems is valued at around USD 230 million and covers spare parts, repair services, training, technical support, and contractor assistance, with BAE Systems serving as the lead contractor.

The AH-64E Apache fleet, one of the most advanced attack helicopter systems in service with the Indian Army, is equipped with precision weapons including Hellfire missiles, rockets, and a 30mm chain gun. The USD 198.2 million support package for these helicopters includes engineering services, logistics, training, technical documentation, and contractor support, primarily involving Boeing and Lockheed Martin.

US defence officials stated that the deal aligns with broader foreign policy and security objectives by reinforcing strategic ties with India, which is considered a key defence partner in the Indo-Pacific region. They also noted that the agreement is intended to enhance India’s defence preparedness without impacting regional military balance or US readiness.

These sustainment arrangements come after India’s earlier procurement of Apache helicopters in 2019 and M777 howitzers to modernise its artillery forces. They also align with India’s ongoing military modernisation efforts, which include indigenous drone development, UAV programmes, and new-generation defence acquisitions. The agreement underscores the maturing US–India defence relationship, with a growing emphasis not only on procurement but also on long-term maintenance and operational readiness of critical military platforms.
