Thailand’s military has closed nearly all border crossings with Cambodia, blocking access for most travelers, including tourists and traders, due to rising security concerns linked to an intensifying border dispute between the two nations. The tension escalated following a brief armed clash near the border late last month that resulted in the death of a Cambodian soldier. Since then, both countries have imposed retaliatory measures, with Cambodia recently halting all Thai fuel and gas imports.

In a statement released late Monday (June 23), the Thai military announced that all land border checkpoints in seven provinces bordering Cambodia would be closed to vehicles, tourists, and traders. Exceptions will be made for humanitarian needs such as medical emergencies, students, or other urgent situations, subject to the discretion of security forces at the checkpoints.

The military stated the closures are aligned with the current security threats, especially as political, diplomatic, and military tensions between Thailand and Cambodia continue to grow. Authorities also noted that the border restrictions aim to support efforts to shut down illegal scam centers operating in Cambodia—a concern raised earlier the same day by Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra.

She also announced that Thailand would cut off cross-border supplies, including electricity, to regions involved in illegal activities. The prime minister is currently facing criticism for her management of the dispute, especially after a leaked phone call with former Cambodian leader Hun Sen appeared to show her criticizing a senior Thai military officer.
