Texas to Get 16.8 Billion dollar SpaceX Chip Manufacturing Plant, Bringing More Than 3,000 New Jobs

SpaceX, together with electric vehicle giant Tesla, has announced plans to invest $16.8 billion in a state-of-the-art semiconductor manufacturing facility in Texas. The project, named Terafab, is intended to strengthen AI chip production and help address the growing global demand for advanced semiconductors.
According to official announcements, the first phase of the project will involve constructing a 100-million-square-foot, vertically integrated manufacturing complex in Grimes County, Texas. The facility is expected to generate more than 3,000 well-paying jobs, including positions for engineers, technicians, and manufacturing specialists. Additional development phases are planned, with overall investment likely to increase over time.
Elon Musk, founder and CEO of SpaceX, said the Terafab project represents a major step toward expanding advanced manufacturing in the United States. He noted that the facility will support large-scale AI chip production for applications both on Earth and in space while creating thousands of skilled jobs in Texas.
The complex is being developed to support the rapidly increasing computing needs of Musk's businesses, which are projected to require more than one terawatt of computing capacity in the future. By bringing chip fabrication, packaging, and testing together at one location, the plant will manufacture advanced processors and memory chips for products such as Tesla's Optimus humanoid robots, Cybercab autonomous vehicles, and high-performance computing systems planned for SpaceX's future orbital data centres.
The investment also reflects Musk's broader strategy of integrating artificial intelligence across his companies, particularly after SpaceX completed the acquisition of AI startup xAI earlier this year. Texas Governor Greg Abbott welcomed the announcement, revealing that the state will provide a $30 million performance-based grant through the Texas Enterprise Fund to support the project. He said the investment would significantly boost semiconductor production in Texas while creating new economic opportunities and reinforcing the state's position as a leading hub for advanced technology manufacturing.
