Tamil Nadu Assembly Erupts in Uproar Over CM Vijay's ED Remarks; DMK MLAs Evicted

The Tamil Nadu Assembly witnessed heated scenes on Tuesday after DMK legislators strongly objected to remarks made by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay concerning Enforcement Directorate (ED) allegations against the party. The disagreement quickly escalated into a major uproar, eventually resulting in the eviction of protesting DMK MLAs from the House.

The controversy began when DMK Whip E.V. Velu raised objections to statements made by Vijay during his speech in the Assembly on Monday. The DMK demanded that references relating to ED documents and corruption allegations against previous DMK governments be removed from the official proceedings.

Speaker J.C.D. Prabhakar rejected the demand, maintaining that the Chief Minister had referred to information already available in the public domain. The decision angered DMK members, who began protesting inside the House and raised slogans against the ruling side. As the disruption continued, the Speaker repeatedly appealed to the protesting legislators to return to their seats and allow the proceedings to continue. The appeals failed to calm the situation, prompting the Speaker to direct Assembly marshals to remove the protesting members. The DMK MLAs were subsequently escorted out of the Assembly.

The confrontation followed Vijay’s remarks a day earlier in which he launched a political attack on the DMK and referred to allegations and investigations associated with the Enforcement Directorate. He also invoked the Sarkaria Commission while questioning the record of earlier DMK administrations. The DMK rejected Vijay’s allegations and accused the government of using the Assembly to target the opposition. Opposition leaders argued that the ruling party should focus on the performance of the present government rather than repeatedly raising allegations connected to previous administrations.

The latest confrontation is the second major disruption in the Assembly within two days and reflects the increasingly sharp political contest between Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam government and the DMK. With both sides trading accusations over corruption and governance, proceedings in the House have become increasingly contentious.

The incident is also significant because Assembly debates provide the opposition with an opportunity to challenge the government and seek responses to political allegations. The repeated disruptions, however, have raised concerns over whether substantive legislative business is being overshadowed by political confrontations. The dispute over Vijay’s ED remarks is expected to remain a major political issue in Tamil Nadu as the ruling party and the DMK continue to clash over corruption allegations, governance and the political record of their respective administrations.
