Tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan intensified after the Afghan Taliban reportedly carried out retaliatory drone strikes targeting a Pakistani military facility in Kohat. The attack came amid an escalating cycle of cross-border military actions between the two neighbours. According to reports, weaponised drones were launched toward a Pakistani Army camp in Kohat, a strategically important military location in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The strikes were described as a retaliation for recent Pakistani air raids on Taliban positions inside Afghanistan.

Taliban officials claimed responsibility for the drone attack, saying it was carried out in response to Pakistan’s earlier airstrikes in Afghan cities including Kabul and Kandahar. Afghan authorities alleged that those strikes caused casualties and damage to infrastructure, further fueling tensions between the two countries.

The drone operation marks a significant escalation in the conflict, highlighting how the confrontation between Islamabad and the Taliban-led government in Kabul is increasingly spilling across the border. Analysts warn that the use of drones and retaliatory attacks indicates a new and dangerous phase in the already volatile relationship.

In response to the drone strike, Pakistani security forces reportedly heightened security around key military installations and began tracking the origin of the drones. Officials have also reiterated that Pakistan will respond strongly to any attacks on its military bases. The latest developments come amid a broader military confrontation between the two sides, which has included airstrikes, artillery exchanges and border clashes.

Pakistan has accused Afghanistan of allowing militant groups hostile to Islamabad to operate from Afghan territory—an allegation the Taliban leadership denies.

With both sides continuing to exchange accusations and retaliatory strikes, regional observers fear the confrontation could spiral into a wider conflict unless diplomatic efforts are revived. The ongoing hostilities have also raised concerns about the safety of civilians living near the porous and heavily militarised Pakistan-Afghanistan border.
