West Bengal BJP president and Rajya Sabha MP Samik Bhattacharya has once again reiterated the Bharatiya Janata Party's long-standing commitment to implementing the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state if the party remains in power. His remarks come at a time when discussions around the proposed legislation have gained fresh political momentum in West Bengal.

Speaking on the issue, Bhattacharya said that the BJP has consistently supported the idea of a Uniform Civil Code since its inception and that the party has never hidden its position on the matter. According to him, the implementation of the UCC is part of the BJP's broader vision of ensuring a common civil framework for all citizens, irrespective of religion. He added that while the party is committed to the policy, the timing and legal process of its implementation would be determined by the West Bengal government. Recent statements from BJP leaders indicate that the state government is preparing to move ahead with the proposal through the legislative process.

The Uniform Civil Code seeks to establish a common set of civil laws governing matters such as marriage, divorce, inheritance, adoption and succession, replacing religion-based personal laws. Supporters argue that such a framework would promote equality before the law and strengthen constitutional values by providing the same legal rights and responsibilities to every citizen. On the other hand, critics believe that personal laws are closely linked to religious and cultural identities and should be protected. As a result, the issue continues to generate intense political and legal debate across the country.Bhattacharya also addressed concerns surrounding tribal communities, clarifying that the proposed Uniform Civil Code in West Bengal would not apply to members of Scheduled Tribes. He said that the constitutional protections, customs and traditional rights enjoyed by tribal communities would remain unaffected, attempting to allay concerns that have surfaced during recent public discussions.

The BJP has repeatedly highlighted the UCC as one of its key governance priorities, alongside other major policy initiatives. Similar legislative efforts have already been undertaken in BJP-ruled states such as Uttarakhand, while other states have announced plans to introduce comparable frameworks. The party believes that adopting a common civil code will create greater legal uniformity and reduce disparities arising from multiple personal laws.

Political observers believe the UCC debate is likely to remain one of the most significant issues in West Bengal's legislative and political landscape. While supporters see it as a step toward legal equality, opposition parties are expected to challenge the proposal on constitutional, cultural and social grounds. The discussions in the Assembly are therefore expected to attract nationwide attention.As the state moves closer to debating the proposed legislation, the Uniform Civil Code is set to remain at the centre of political discourse, with both supporters and critics preparing for a vigorous debate over its implications for West Bengal.
