Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday said that discussions regarding the establishment of the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Guwahati have moved forward significantly after his meeting with Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan in New Delhi. The Chief Minister shared details of the meeting on social media platform X, stating that the talks focused on shaping the framework and development plans for the proposed IIM Guwahati campus. The institute is expected to strengthen Assam’s higher education ecosystem and contribute to the state’s long-term academic growth.

“Assam will become East India’s next education hub and we are trying to bring the best institutions to the state. Today, I had a productive meeting with Union Education Minister Shri Dharmendra Pradhan Ji on finalising the contours of the IIM-Guwahati campus. I am grateful for his continuous support in strengthening Assam’s education infrastructure,” Sarma posted on X.

The proposed IIM Guwahati forms part of the Assam government’s broader strategy to position the state as a leading educational destination in eastern India by attracting premier academic and research institutions. Officials believe the institute will help expand opportunities in management education, research, entrepreneurship, and skill development while further enhancing Assam’s reputation in the education sector.

Details regarding the campus location, infrastructure blueprint, and implementation timeline are expected to be announced after further consultations between the Centre and the Assam government. In a separate development, Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER) Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, along with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, launched Mission “Senehjori” — Assam Muga Silk USP — on Tuesday.

The initiative is designed as a cluster-based programme aimed at transforming Assam’s traditional Muga silk industry into a globally recognised luxury textile sector. According to an official statement, the mission is being implemented by the MDoNER Ministry in collaboration with the Assam government, the Central Silk Board, the Ministry of Textiles, and other central agencies. The programme seeks to strengthen the entire Muga silk ecosystem, including host-plant cultivation, silkworm seed production, weaving, branding, export promotion, tourism, and digital traceability.
