PSL Hit by Ball-Tampering Controversy; Shaheen Afridi, Haris Rauf, and Fakhar Zaman Seen on Camera

A controversy has emerged in the Pakistan Super League after Lahore Qalandars were accused of ball-tampering during their match against Karachi Kings on Sunday. Batter Fakhar Zaman has been specifically charged, although he denied the allegation during a disciplinary hearing conducted by match referee Roshan Mahanama, according to a Pakistan Cricket Board statement. Another hearing will take place within 48 hours, after which a final decision will be announced. If proven guilty, a Level 3 offence carries a minimum one-match suspension.
The incident occurred during the final over, when Karachi Kings needed 14 runs to win. Lahore captain Shaheen Shah Afridi, Fakhar Zaman, and bowler Haris Rauf were seen discussing at the top of the run-up, with all three handling the ball at different points — a common occurrence in tense match situations.
However, umpire Faisal Afridi intervened, examined the ball, and consulted with fellow umpire Sharfuddoula. They concluded that the ball had been deliberately tampered with, awarding Karachi five penalty runs and replacing the ball. This reduced Karachi’s target to nine runs off the final over. Despite losing Khushdil Shah on the first ball, Karachi secured victory when Abbas Afridi hit a four and a six, sealing a four-wicket win in 19.3 overs. The incident has sparked widespread debate about the consistency of umpiring decisions and the role of technology in detecting ball-tampering. While the penalty significantly shifted the game’s momentum, questions have arisen over whether there is enough evidence to charge a single player.
Supporters of Lahore Qalandars argue that the ball was handled by several players and officials throughout the match, making it difficult to identify any specific act of tampering. The PCB is expected to closely examine broadcast footage and the referee’s report in the next hearing to determine whether the ball’s condition supports the umpires’ claims.
The situation has also drawn comparisons to past ball-tampering scandals involving the Australian team, where players like David Warner and Steve Smith received heavy bans. It remains to be seen whether similar disciplinary action could be taken against Fakhar, Shaheen, or Haris, who are now under scrutiny.
