Fresh protests have erupted across Pakistan as supporters of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan took to the streets, alleging mistreatment and raising serious concerns about his deteriorating health in custody. Thousands of his supporters blocked key highways and staged demonstrations after reports emerged that Khan’s eyesight had severely worsened while in prison.

The unrest intensified after a court-appointed lawyer reported that the 73-year-old former leader had lost significant vision in his right eye while being held in Adiala Jail, where he has been incarcerated since 2023. His party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), and supporters have demanded immediate medical treatment and access to specialist care.

Nationwide protests disrupt key routes

The protests escalated dramatically when thousands of PTI workers and supporters occupied the Attock Bridge, effectively cutting off the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province from the rest of the country. The blockade caused massive traffic disruptions, leaving hundreds of vehicles stranded and highlighting the growing volatility of Pakistan’s political landscape.

Simultaneously, opposition supporters staged demonstrations near Parliament in Islamabad, demanding that Khan be immediately transferred to a hospital for proper medical evaluation and treatment.

Imran Khan’s sisters accuse powerful establishment figures

Adding fuel to the political crisis, Khan’s sisters publicly accused Pakistan Army chief Asim Munir and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi of threatening their family. His sisters, including Aleema Khan, alleged that powerful figures within Pakistan’s establishment were targeting them and conspiring against the former prime minister.

They claimed Khan had endured severe mistreatment in prison and warned of serious consequences if anything happened to him or their family. These accusations have intensified tensions between Khan’s supporters and Pakistan’s powerful military and political establishment.

Conflicting claims deepen political tensions

While Khan’s family and supporters insist his health is deteriorating rapidly, government-appointed medical officials have claimed there has been improvement in his eyesight. However, Khan’s family has rejected these claims, alleging lack of transparency and demanding independent medical evaluation.

The government has also faced criticism for restricting family access during medical examinations, further fueling suspicions and anger among supporters.

Crisis exposes Pakistan’s growing instability

This marks another major wave of protests linked to Khan’s imprisonment and health condition. His supporters view the cases against him as politically motivated, while authorities maintain that legal procedures are being followed.

The ongoing protests and escalating accusations highlight Pakistan’s deep political divisions and fragile internal stability. With tensions rising between the government, military establishment, and opposition supporters, Khan’s imprisonment continues to remain a major flashpoint threatening further unrest across the country.
