West Bengal Education Minister Bratya Basu has provided his statement to the police regarding an FIR filed against him and others in connection with the recent violence at Jadavpur University, a senior officer confirmed. The FIR was registered following a complaint by JU student Indranuj Roy, who was injured during the March 1 incident. It names Basu, JU professor and TMC leader Om Prakash Mishra, along with several others.
According to the police, Basu was questioned about the entire episode, including details of the alleged attack. His statement has now been recorded. Earlier, investigators had also spoken to Basu’s driver, Rehan Molla, and Mishra. The incident occurred when the minister’s car allegedly grazed Roy and other students amid protests on the JU campus. The FIR includes charges under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 (BNS), covering offenses such as voluntarily causing hurt, assaulting a woman with intent to outrage her modesty, criminal intimidation involving threats of death or grievous harm, and destruction of property.
Following the violence, student protests intensified, demanding accountability. Basu claimed that he sustained injuries when protesters damaged his car’s windshield. He maintained that he was open to discussions with students regarding their demands, including holding student union elections. However, he also alleged that the students deliberately tried to create chaos and forcibly stop his vehicle during the protest. The situation remains tense as authorities continue their investigation into the incident, with both sides standing by their claims. The police are expected to review further evidence and statements in the coming days to determine the next course of action.
