On the night of May 5-6, Pakistani forces violated the ceasefire agreement along the Line of Control (LoC) for the 12th consecutive day, intensifying the already strained relations between India and Pakistan following the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam that killed 26 people, mostly tourists. According to official sources, Pakistani troops engaged in unprovoked small arms fire across several sectors including Kupwara, Baramulla, Poonch, Rajouri, Mendhar, Naushera, Sunderbani, and Akhnoor in Jammu and Kashmir. The Indian Army responded swiftly and in proportion to the aggression.
Such breaches have been rare since the two countries reaffirmed the ceasefire agreement on February 25, 2021. However, following India's move to downgrade diplomatic relations, suspend the Indus Waters Treaty, and halt cross-border movement via the Attari border, violations have sharply increased — beginning with small arms fire reported on April 24.
As per a PTI report, initial attacks were concentrated in north Kashmir’s Kupwara and Baramulla districts, later spreading to sectors in Jammu such as Poonch and Akhnoor. Amid these hostilities, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has issued directives for mock civil defence drills across the nation, scheduled for Wednesday. These drills will simulate hostile attack scenarios, involving air-raid sirens, blackout protocols, civilian evacuation training, and infrastructure camouflage exercises across 244 designated districts, reaching even rural areas.
The recent surge in tensions began with the Pahalgam terror incident. In response, India revoked visa privileges for Pakistani nationals under the SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme and ordered all Pakistani citizens living in India to exit. Pakistan, in turn, suspended the Simla Agreement and closed its airspace to Indian flights. In a further escalation, India has blocked Instagram accounts of Pakistani celebrities and taken down over 15 Pakistani YouTube channels for allegedly spreading misinformation and communal narratives.
