Pakistan’s military has claimed that at least 70 fighters were killed in airstrikes carried out along the Afghanistan border, further escalating tensions between the two neighbouring countries amid growing security concerns.According to Pakistani officials, the strikes targeted suspected militant hideouts in eastern Afghanistan, including areas in Nangarhar, Paktika and Khost provinces. Islamabad stated that the operations were based on intelligence inputs and aimed at dismantling safe havens used by militants responsible for recent attacks inside Pakistan.

Pakistan has repeatedly blamed the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) for cross-border violence and accused militants of using Afghan territory to launch attacks against Pakistani security forces and civilians.

Afghanistan Rejects Pakistan’s Claims

Afghanistan’s Taliban-led administration strongly denied Pakistan’s claims regarding militant casualties. Officials in Kabul described the strikes as a violation of Afghan sovereignty and said civilian areas, including residential buildings, were hit during the operation.

Afghan authorities reported civilian casualties and injuries, contradicting Pakistan’s assertion that the strikes were limited to militant targets. The Taliban government condemned the air raids and warned of consequences if such cross-border military actions continued.

Diplomatic Tensions Rise

The Afghan government summoned Pakistan’s envoy to formally protest the strikes, highlighting the seriousness of the diplomatic fallout. Kabul reiterated that it does not allow its territory to be used for attacks against other countries and called on Pakistan to resolve disputes through dialogue rather than military force.

Pakistan, however, defended the strikes as necessary for national security, arguing that it has repeatedly urged Afghan authorities to take stronger action against militant groups operating near the border.

Fragile Border Situation

Relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan have deteriorated in recent months due to rising militant attacks, border clashes, and mutual accusations. The porous border has long been a source of tension, with both sides accusing each other of failing to control armed groups. Security analysts warn that continued military escalation could further destabilise the region and complicate diplomatic efforts to restore stability. The situation remains volatile, with both nations closely monitoring developments and preparing for possible further escalation.
