Tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan have sharply escalated following a series of cross-border strikes and retaliatory attacks, raising fears of a wider conflict along their volatile frontier. The latest confrontation began after Afghan forces reportedly launched drone attacks targeting military bases across the border in Pakistan. In response, Pakistan carried out airstrikes on what it described as militant and infrastructure targets inside Afghanistan. The exchange marked one of the most serious flare-ups between the two neighbours in recent years.

Afghanistan’s Taliban-led government said its actions were a response to earlier Pakistani airstrikes that allegedly caused civilian casualties in eastern Afghanistan. Reports suggested that several civilians were killed during those earlier strikes in Nangarhar Province, prompting strong criticism from Afghan officials and demands for accountability.

Pakistan, however, maintains that its military operations are aimed at militant groups that it accuses of operating from Afghan territory. Islamabad has repeatedly blamed fighters from the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan and other armed groups for a series of deadly attacks inside the country.

The deteriorating relationship between Islamabad and the Taliban government has been a growing concern since the Taliban returned to power in Afghanistan in 2021. Pakistan has long argued that Afghan territory is being used as a base by militants targeting Pakistani security forces and civilians

an accusation that Kabul denies.

The latest violence has further strained diplomatic relations between the two countries and raised concerns about stability along the lengthy and porous border they share. Analysts warn that continued retaliatory strikes could push the situation into a prolonged cycle of escalation, increasing insecurity in a region already facing militant activity and political tensions.

Regional observers have called for restraint and dialogue to prevent the crisis from spiralling further. However, with both sides trading accusations and carrying out military actions, the situation along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border remains highly volatile.
