OpenAI to provide free access to ChatGPT Go for one year in India - see who qualifies

OpenAI is reportedly rolling out a one-year free access offer for ChatGPT Go in India starting November 4, coinciding with its first DevDay Exchange event in Bengaluru. As per NDTV, the offer will apply to all newly registered users who join during the promotional period. Nick Turley, OpenAI’s Vice President and Head of ChatGPT, said the decision was motivated by the creativity of Indian users and reflects the company’s India-first approach. He explained that ahead of the company’s first DevDay Exchange event in the country, the goal is to make advanced AI more accessible so that more people in India can benefit from it.
ChatGPT Go was introduced in India in August as a budget-friendly subscription priced at ₹399 per month, providing higher chat usage, increased daily image creation, support for larger file uploads, and extended memory features. Under this new offer, users who sign up will gain access to all these enhanced capabilities, powered by OpenAI’s flagship GPT-5 model, completely free for one year. Reports also suggest that current ChatGPT Go subscribers will be eligible for an extra year of access at no additional cost.
India has become one of OpenAI’s fastest-growing markets and is now considered its second-largest globally. The company revealed that paid subscriptions doubled within a month of ChatGPT Go’s launch in the country. This free-access initiative also comes at a time when rivals like Perplexity AI and Google Gemini are introducing similar free plans in India, with Perplexity partnering with Airtel for a year of complimentary Perplexity Pro and Google offering a year of free Google AI Pro for students.
