More than 10 million people, along with delegations from over 100 countries, are expected to gather in Tehran for the funeral of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was reportedly killed alongside several members of his family during the opening phase of the US-Israel conflict involving Iran, according to Al Jazeera.

Iran's Embassy in India shared images from Tehran's Grand Mosalla, showing thousands of mourners assembled to pay their final respects to the late Supreme Leader. While speaking at Mount Rushmore, US President Donald Trump said the United States would refrain from taking military action against Iran for a week to allow the funeral ceremonies to take place.

"We knocked the hell out of Iran, they're dying to settle. They want to settle so badly. We gave them a week off for a funeral because we're nice people," Trump said during his remarks. India was represented at the funeral by Governor of Bihar Syed Ata Hasnain and Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita. In a post on X, Hasnain said he attended the ceremony alongside Margherita and conveyed India's condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the recent conflict.

According to reports, the turnout is expected to be one of the largest public gatherings in Iran since the nationwide protests over economic hardship that took place in December and January. Security experts have suggested that authorities delayed the funeral arrangements for months due to safety concerns.

The state funeral is scheduled to begin at the prayer hall associated with Imam Khomeini, the founder of the Islamic Republic, followed by a funeral procession on July 6. The ceremonies coincide with US Independence Day celebrations on July 4, as tensions between Washington and Tehran appear to be easing. Historical comparisons have also been drawn with Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini's funeral in 1989, which attracted an estimated 10 million mourners and was marked by deadly stampedes that claimed dozens of lives, according to the New York Post.
