Lake Ontario Now Appears as 'Lake America' on Google Maps in the US

Google Maps has begun displaying the name “Lake America” instead of “Lake Ontario” for users in the United States, following a decision by the US government to officially rename the Great Lake in federal records. The change comes after US President Donald Trump signed an executive order directing the lake to be renamed Lake America. Google has now updated its mapping service in accordance with the US Geographic Names Information System, the federal database that maintains official geographic names in the United States.

The new name is being displayed based on the user's location. People accessing Google Maps from the United States will see “Lake America,” while users in Canada will continue to see “Lake Ontario.” In other parts of the world, Google is expected to display both names, with the lake appearing as “Lake Ontario (Lake America).”

Lake Ontario is one of North America's five Great Lakes and forms part of the international border between the Canadian province of Ontario and New York state. Because the lake is shared by the two countries, the US decision has quickly become a point of disagreement between Washington and Ottawa.

Canadian officials have made clear that they will continue to use the name Lake Ontario. Ontario Premier Doug Ford has publicly reaffirmed the traditional name, while Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has also rejected the US government's renaming decision. The controversy comes at a sensitive time in US-Canada relations, which have already faced disagreements over trade, tariffs and other economic issues. The renaming has consequently attracted attention beyond the issue of mapping, with critics viewing it as another symbolic point of tension between the neighbouring countries.

Google's decision follows a similar approach used after the Trump administration changed the US government's official designation of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. The technology company has previously explained that its Maps service uses official government sources and can display different geographic names depending on the country where a user is accessing the platform.

The change does not alter the lake's geography, borders or physical characteristics. Instead, it changes the name displayed by Google Maps for users in the United States. Other mapping services may also choose to retain the traditional name, meaning different platforms could continue showing different labels for the same body of water.

For Canadians, Lake Ontario remains Lake Ontario. For US users opening Google Maps, however, the familiar name has now been replaced by “Lake America,” turning a geographic name change into the latest symbol of the increasingly complicated relationship between the United States and Canada.
