Jeremy Renner described experiencing vivid hallucinations, including imagined conversations with actor Jamie Foxx, while recovering from the severe snowplough accident that nearly took his life in January 2023. At 54, Renner was critically injured after being run over by his own snowplough and later shared these surreal episodes in his memoir My Next Breath: A Memoir.

He recalled that under heavy medication meant to help him sleep, he once imagined speaking with both his curtains and Jamie Foxx. “When the curtains didn’t answer, Jamie Foxx did,” he wrote, humorously noting that although Jamie appeared frequently in his room, he was never actually there. Renner imagined chatting with him and even going snowmobiling together — an event he admitted never happened, especially since there was no snow in Southern California.

The Avengers actor, who sustained 38 broken bones, detailed his hospitalization and his eventual transfer to his Los Angeles home, where his medication was switched from IV to pills. This change intensified the hallucinations. He mentioned that his mother or sister would overhear him talking and realize he was under the influence of the meds. “Maybe we should dial back those meds — we don’t want to lose him,” someone would often suggest.

Renner expressed strong dislike for how the medication made him feel and said that once he left the hospital, he longed for normalcy — one that didn’t involve talking to inanimate objects or imaginary versions of Jamie Foxx. He attributed the accident to a brief lapse in focus while trying to prevent his nephew from being harmed. He lost his footing on the snowplough’s tracks and was thrown forward, hitting his head and being crushed by the 14,000-pound machine. He recalled the brutal moment in chilling detail, describing the overwhelming force and sound of the metal grinding over his body as something that permanently changed his life.
