US Vice President JD Vance has stated that Lebanon is not part of the recently announced ceasefire between the United States and Iran, adding to growing confusion and concern over the fragile agreement.

Speaking amid escalating tensions in the region, Vance said Washington had “never indicated” that the truce would extend to Lebanon. He described the disagreement as a “legitimate misunderstanding,” as some parties including Iran and mediators—had suggested that the ceasefire applied more broadly.

The clarification comes at a critical moment, as Israeli military operations in Lebanon continue despite the ceasefire announcement. Israeli forces have intensified strikes targeting Hezbollah positions, leading to heavy casualties and raising doubts about the effectiveness of the truce.

While the ceasefire was intended to pause direct hostilities between the US and Iran, differing interpretations have exposed deep divisions among key stakeholders. Pakistan, which helped mediate the agreement, and Iran have both maintained that Lebanon should be included, while the US and Israel have firmly rejected that view.

Vance also indicated that Israel had informally agreed to show some restraint in Lebanon during negotiations, but emphasized that this did not amount to a formal inclusion of Lebanon in the deal.

The situation on the ground suggests that the ceasefire remains highly fragile. Continued violence in Lebanon, coupled with threats from Iran and ongoing military posturing by the US, has increased fears that the agreement could collapse before broader peace talks begin.

As diplomatic efforts continue, the disagreement over Lebanon’s status highlights the complexity of the conflict and the challenges of achieving a comprehensive ceasefire in a region marked by overlapping wars and competing interests.
