Continuous heavy rainfall in various parts of Jammu and Kashmir has caused the Chenab River’s water level to rise, leading to an overflow at the Baglihar Hydroelectric Power Project. Officials have confirmed that several people lost their lives in the Doda district due to rain-related incidents.

Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of the Doda-Kishtwar-Ramban Range, Shridhar Patil, acknowledged the severity of the situation and advised the public to stay away from rivers and overflowing streams. Speaking to ANI, he said, “The Chenab River’s water level has increased significantly. We have received reports of casualties in Doda. I urge everyone to avoid going near rivers, as the current conditions are dangerous.”

In a separate incident on Wednesday, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) successfully rescued a person who was stranded in the Tawi River in Jammu after heavy overnight rain caused a sudden surge in water levels. SDRF personnel accessed the location and managed to bring the individual to safety. Vehicle movement was also halted at Chanderkote due to a landslide at Mehar and the T2 Tunnel Marg, resulting in the closure of the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway.

Earlier, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a weather alert, forecasting intensified rainfall across several regions and a heatwave warning for parts of the Jammu division. Isolated heavy rain is expected in Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Muzaffarabad from June 25 to 27, and in eastern Uttar Pradesh from June 27 to 30. The IMD also predicted light to moderate rain with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds of 30-40 kmph across northwest India from June 24 to June 30.
