James Blunt says that being known as a one-hit wonder is actually good for his ego.

James Blunt has embraced the label of being a "one-hit wonder," calling it beneficial for keeping his ego in check. The 51-year-old singer, best known for his 2005 breakout hit You're Beautiful, says he's perfectly fine with the title—especially in the U.S., where that’s how many see him. "I'm actually really happy with that," he told People. "As I say on my social media, one hit is all you need. The people calling me a one-hit wonder often haven't had any hits at all, so I’m proud of it."
He added that the label helps him stay grounded. "If I ever get ahead of myself, someone can just say, ‘You’re just a one-hit wonder, James,’ and that brings me right back down. And that’s a good thing." Blunt also reflected on the challenges he faced early in his career, including rejection from every UK record label. He believes this was partly due to his posh accent and the class system, which made him seem unrelatable to some.
It wasn't until Linda Perry from Custard Records gave him a chance that things changed. “That was probably my last shot,” he admitted. “UK labels thought no one would connect with me, and maybe they were right to an extent. But Linda believed in me—we hit it off and celebrated with a night out.”
Despite the success of You're Beautiful, Blunt has faced ongoing criticism over the years. Known for his witty and self-deprecating humor on social media, he now takes a more playful approach to public perception. “I’ve always been a bit silly,” he said. “Early on, I was too serious when talking about my music in interviews. Now, I still care deeply about the music, but I don’t take myself too seriously when talking about it.”
