External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Thursday joined his counterparts from Japan, Germany, and Brazil at the G4 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting on the sidelines of the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA80). The group reiterated its strong commitment to reforming the United Nations, including the expansion of the UN Security Council.

In a post on X, Jaishankar highlighted that the discussions focused on Security Council reforms and reviewed the ongoing Inter-Governmental Negotiation (IGN) process. He said, “Glad to join the G4 Foreign Ministers Meeting along with colleagues Takeshi Iwaya, Johann Wadephul, and Mauro Vieira in New York today. G4 reiterated its commitment to reforming the United Nations including the UN Security Council. It also assessed the current state of the Inter-Governmental Negotiation IGN process.”

Earlier in the day, Jaishankar engaged in several bilateral meetings on the sidelines of UNGA80 and the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting hosted by South Africa. He exchanged greetings with Malaysian Foreign Minister Mohamad Haji Hasan and met UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper, discussing follow-ups from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit, during which Vision 2035 was announced. He also held discussions with Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and Australian Foreign Minister Senator Wong.

Speaking at the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, Jaishankar emphasized the critical role of the G20 in maintaining global stability amid ongoing geopolitical and economic turbulence. He stressed that member countries should strengthen dialogue and diplomacy, combat terrorism decisively, and enhance energy and economic security to guide the world toward a more positive direction.
