Jaishankar Congratulates Maldives Foreign Minister Iruthisham Adam on Nation's 61st Independence Day

India's External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Sunday conveyed his greetings to the Government and people of the Maldives as the island nation celebrated its 61st Independence Day. Sharing a message on X, Jaishankar extended his best wishes to Maldivian Foreign Minister Iruthisham Adam, as well as the country's leadership and citizens. "Best wishes to FM @IruthishamAdam, the Government and people of Maldives on their 61st Independence Day," he posted.

The occasion follows last year's landmark celebrations, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the Maldives' 60th Independence Day as the Guest of Honour. It was the first time an Indian Prime Minister had participated in the country's Independence Day celebrations and also marked the first visit by a foreign Head of State or Government hosted by President Mohamed Muizzu for the event.

During the visit, Prime Minister Modi joined President Muizzu at Republic Square to witness the Independence Day parade, which featured displays by the Maldivian National Defence Force, other security units, and vibrant cultural performances highlighting the country's progress and national achievements.

Modi also thanked President Muizzu and the people of the Maldives for the warm welcome, describing his participation as Guest of Honour as a significant moment in the growing partnership between the two neighbouring nations. The year 2025 additionally marked 60 years of diplomatic relations between India and the Maldives.

On the economic front, the two countries have recently advanced discussions on a proposed Free Trade Agreement (FTA). The first round of negotiations, held virtually between 29 June and 7 July, covered eight policy areas through multiple technical sessions. According to India's Ministry of Commerce and Industry, both sides made meaningful progress and found common ground on several key issues.

The proposed agreement is expected to improve market access, encourage investment, expand economic cooperation, and support sustainable growth in both countries. India remains the Maldives' second-largest trading partner, with bilateral trade increasing from USD 679.70 million in 2024–25 to USD 771.76 million in 2025–26, reflecting a growth of 13.54%. Officials from both countries have reiterated their commitment to negotiating a balanced and comprehensive trade pact based on fairness and mutual benefit, with the aim of further strengthening long-term economic and investment ties.
