A large number of Shia Muslims gathered on the streets of Srinagar on Wednesday to take part in the 8th Muharram procession. The event was marked by deep solemnity as participants paid tribute to the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, who was martyred in the Battle of Karbala. As the procession moved through designated city routes, mourners expressed their grief by beating their chests in traditional displays of mourning.

Muharram, the first month of the Islamic lunar calendar, also marks the beginning of the Islamic New Year. In India, it is observed with prayers, fasting, and acts of charity. During the procession, district police arranged the distribution of water and refreshments to ensure participants’ comfort and smooth conduct of the event.

Srinagar Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) GV Sundeep Chakravarthy stated that adequate security and administrative arrangements were made to facilitate the procession. He added that the event was scheduled to conclude at the Imambara by evening and urged the public to follow traffic advisories and cooperate with authorities. He also noted that police, traffic officials, and civic agencies were working together to ensure the peaceful and dignified completion of the procession.

“The procession concludes at the Imambara in the evening. Srinagar district police, along with traffic police and civic administration, are ensuring smooth arrangements. We request the public to adhere to traffic advisories and extend cooperation for the successful conduct of the procession,” he told reporters.

Muharram holds significant religious importance for Shia Muslims worldwide. In India, members of the Shia community, along with people from other faiths, participate in processions and tazias. The month reaches its peak on the 10th day of Muharram, known as Ashura, which commemorates the martyrdom of Imam Hussain ibn Ali and his companions in 680 CE at Karbala, present-day Iraq. For Shia Muslims, Ashura is a day of mourning, while many Sunni Muslims observe it through fasting.
