INDIA Bloc To Meet Over Gyanesh Kumar Row, Sources Reject Attacks On Poll Panel

Leaders of the INDIA bloc are set to meet in New Delhi on Wednesday to discuss the ongoing controversy surrounding Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The meeting comes amid growing opposition criticism of the Election Commission over the electoral-roll revision exercise and reports of differences within the poll panel. Opposition parties are expected to discuss a coordinated response and possible further action against the Chief Election Commissioner.

The Congress has stepped up its criticism of Gyanesh Kumar and is seeking his removal. The issue is also likely to figure prominently in discussions among opposition parties as they consider their next political and parliamentary steps. Several INDIA bloc leaders are expected to attend the meeting, including Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi. Leaders from other opposition parties are also expected to participate, although the attendance of individual parties could vary.

The controversy has intensified following reports suggesting differences among the Election Commissioners over aspects of the SIR exercise. The reports have prompted opposition parties to question the decision-making process within the Election Commission and call for greater transparency. The Election Commission, however, has rejected the suggestion that disagreements during internal deliberations indicate a breakdown in the functioning of the institution. The poll panel has maintained that the SIR order and its subsequent schedules were approved unanimously.

The Commission has also defended the SIR exercise, saying it is aimed at ensuring the electoral rolls remain accurate and identifying issues such as duplicate, deceased or shifted voters. It has stressed that eligible voters have mechanisms to seek correction or inclusion if their names are affected during the verification process.

The EC has separately announced measures concerning voters whose records have been flagged for discrepancies. Booth Level Officers have been directed to assist such voters in submitting the required documents, with Electoral Registration Officers responsible for taking decisions in cases requiring further examination. Government and Election Commission sources have also rejected what they describe as attacks on the credibility of the poll panel. They have argued that the SIR process is based on existing legal provisions and that scrutiny of electoral rolls is a routine part of maintaining accurate voter lists.

The INDIA bloc meeting is therefore expected to focus on both the political response to the Election Commission and the concerns being raised over electoral-roll revisions. The dispute comes at a time when electoral-roll verification has become a major political issue, with opposition parties demanding stronger safeguards against wrongful exclusion while the Election Commission maintains that the exercise is intended to improve the accuracy and reliability of voter lists. Wednesday’s meeting could determine the next course of action for the INDIA bloc, including whether opposition parties pursue a broader campaign or parliamentary move concerning the Chief Election Commissioner.
