India-Australia Naval Ties Strengthen as CNS Admiral Krishna Swaminathan Visits Sydney

India and Australia are further strengthening their naval cooperation, with Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS) Admiral Krishna Swaminathan holding talks with Commander of the Australian Fleet Rear Admiral Anita Williams in Sydney. The Indian Navy said the two senior officers discussed ways to improve coordination and interoperability between the Indian Navy and the Royal Australian Navy. The meeting took place at HMAS Kuttabul in Sydney, where they also exchanged views on the Australian Navy’s changing fleet capabilities and its plans for future inductions.

According to a post shared by the Indian Navy spokesperson on X, Admiral Swaminathan was also taken on a familiarisation tour of HMAS Kuttabul. The visit provided an overview of the naval facility’s infrastructure and operational capabilities. The Admiral’s visit is part of India’s broader effort to expand defence cooperation with Australia and New Zealand. The Ministry of Defence said the tour is focused on strengthening bilateral engagement between the Indian Navy, the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) and the Royal New Zealand Navy (RNZN).

The Australia leg comes amid increasing momentum in bilateral relations. It follows the third India-Australia Annual Summit in July 2026 and the second India-Australia Defence Ministers’ Dialogue held in June. Defence ties between the two countries have continued to expand, with maritime security, operational coordination and cooperation in the Indo-Pacific remaining important areas of engagement.

The New Zealand portion of the visit is also expected to build on recent progress between the two countries. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to New Zealand in July 2026 resulted in India and New Zealand elevating their relationship to a Strategic Partnership and agreeing to broaden cooperation in areas including defence and maritime security.

During his New Zealand visit, Admiral Swaminathan is expected to meet senior leaders of the Royal New Zealand Navy as well as members of the country’s defence leadership. Discussions are likely to focus on operational cooperation, information sharing, joint training and professional exchanges between the two navies.

The CNS will also visit important operational and training facilities and interact with Royal New Zealand Navy personnel and officers pursuing professional military education. The engagements come shortly after the conclusion of the Maritime Cooperation Arrangement between India and New Zealand, which creates a wider framework for practical cooperation at sea.

The visits to Australia and New Zealand highlight India’s growing maritime engagement with key partners in the Indo-Pacific. Through sustained exercises, professional exchanges, information sharing and operational interaction, the Indian Navy is seeking to build stronger partnerships that can contribute to regional peace, security and stability.
