India and Fiji Commit to Expanding Economic and Strategic Partnership.

India and Fiji have taken significant strides in strengthening their bilateral relationship, focusing on expanding economic ties and deepening cooperation across several key sectors. Following a series of high-level discussions between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Fiji's Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, both countries expressed a shared commitment to diversify trade, boost investment, and enhance sectoral collaborations that benefit their peoples and contribute to regional stability.
One of the highlights of this renewed partnership is the grant of market access by Fiji to Indian ghee, a move warmly welcomed by Prime Minister Modi. This step not only promotes Indian exports but also reflects the growing trust and openness between the two nations. Both leaders identified vast untapped potential in bilateral trade and agreed on the need to diversify economic portfolios, particularly focusing on agriculture, healthcare, and technology, while strengthening supply chain resilience to withstand global uncertainties.
Healthcare cooperation emerged as a central pillar during the talks. India and Fiji signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to develop a 100-bed super specialty hospital in Suva, marking the largest Indian infrastructure project in the Pacific region under India’s Grant-in-Aid program. Additionally, collaboration under India’s telemedicine initiative, e-Sanjeevani, aims to improve healthcare access for Fijians through digital connectivity. India has committed to providing tertiary care facilities for a select number of Fijian patients as part of its 'Heal in India' initiative, further solidifying health ties.
Addressing concerns about climate change and sustainable development, India and Fiji reaffirmed their dedication to the Indo-Pacific’s environmental resilience. Both countries are actively involved in global and regional initiatives such as the International Solar Alliance and the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure. New projects like the Tubalevu Village Ground Water Supply Project aim to provide clean drinking water in Fiji, demonstrating India’s focus on development assistance tailored to Fiji’s priorities.
Cultural and people-to-people exchanges also received a strong boost with plans to enhance educational ties, including deputing a Hindi and Sanskrit teacher to Fiji's University and organizing an International Geeta Mahotsav in both countries. A new Declaration of Intent on Migration and Mobility will facilitate easier movement for professionals and students between India and Fiji, cementing cultural bonds alongside economic and strategic collaboration.
Together, these developments mark a remarkable evolution of the India-Fiji partnership, rooted in mutual respect, shared values, and forward-looking ambitions for prosperity and stability in the Indo-Pacific.
