IAF and Japan Begin Preparations as F-2 Fighters Arrive for Veer Guardian 2026

The Indian Air Force on Tuesday welcomed fighter aircraft from the Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF) as the two countries began the second edition of their bilateral air exercise, Veer Guardian 2026, at Air Force Station Jodhpur. The exercise is being conducted from September 9 to September 22 and is aimed at strengthening interoperability, improving tactical capabilities and enhancing operational coordination between the two air forces.

The IAF said two Japanese C-2 transport aircraft arrived at Air Force Station Jodhpur, marking the arrival of the Japanese contingent for the exercise. The Indian side is participating with frontline fighter aircraft, including the indigenous Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas, Su-30MKI and Rafale.

Japan has deployed three F-2A fighter aircraft from the JASDF's 8th Air Wing at Tsuiki Air Base. Around 110 Japanese personnel are taking part in the exercise. During the 14-day exercise, air warriors from both countries will conduct advanced operational missions and participate in professional exchanges aimed at improving their understanding of each other's procedures and capabilities. The exercise programme includes mission-planning sessions, subject matter expert interactions and exchanges involving engineering and aerospace safety personnel.

The IAF said the drills would help enhance interoperability, operational synergy and mutual understanding between the two forces while further strengthening defence ties between India and Japan. The JASDF has also stated that the exercise is intended to improve the tactical proficiency of participating units and deepen mutual understanding between the two air forces.

Veer Guardian 2026 comes as India and Japan continue to expand their defence cooperation through regular military exercises and professional exchanges. The latest edition provides both air forces with an opportunity to train together in complex operational scenarios and further develop their ability to work alongside each other.
