In a heart-wrenching incident, senior stage artist Amrish Kumar passed away while performing a Ramleela scene in Chamba, Himachal Pradesh. What began as a festive celebration quickly turned tragic when Kumar suffered a sudden heart attack during the performance. Kumar was enacting the role of Dashrath, Lord Ram’s father, in front of a live audience when he unexpectedly collapsed while delivering his lines. Panic ensued on stage, and the organisers immediately drew the curtains, halting the show. Kumar was rushed to a nearby hospital, but doctors were unable to revive him and declared him dead.
A resident of Chamba district, Amrish Kumar had been a prominent figure in the Ramleela community for over 50 years, famously portraying both Dashrath and Ravana. His performances were highly anticipated, drawing large crowds each year, and his dedication to the art form made him a beloved figure among audiences and fellow artists alike. Expressing sorrow, Ramleela Club member Sudesh Mahajan said, “This is an irreparable loss for all of us. Amrish ji was not just an artist, but the very soul of Ramleela. May God grant peace to his soul and give strength to his family to bear this loss.”
The news of his passing has sent shockwaves throughout the district, leaving fans and the local community in mourning. In light of the tragedy, the Ramleela Club has decided to postpone all upcoming events for the next few days as a mark of respect to the legendary performer. Amrish Kumar’s contribution to the art of Ramleela will be fondly remembered and deeply missed.
