A French naval officer accidentally revealed the real-time location of the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle after sharing a workout on a public fitness app, highlighting a serious security lapse during heightened tensions in West Asia, according to a report by Le Monde. The officer had recorded a 36-minute run using a smartwatch on March 13, covering over four miles on the ship’s deck. This data made it possible to pinpoint the carrier’s position in the Mediterranean near Cyprus, roughly 62 miles from Turkey. The incident occurred shortly after France deployed the carrier on March 3 and followed recent US and Israeli strikes on Iran.

The app, used by millions worldwide, allows users to share activity data including location, which has long raised concerns about operational security for military personnel. The report also noted similar posts from another French Navy vessel, with images and geotagged activity exposing details of onboard operations.

French authorities acknowledged the breach, stating that the officer violated digital security rules and that disciplinary action would follow. Comparable incidents have occurred in the past, involving security personnel linked to global leaders, where shared fitness data exposed sensitive locations.

Tensions in the region remain high, with concerns over threats to key routes like the Strait of Hormuz. Separate reports also indicated a drone attack on a British base in Cyprus, allegedly carried out by Iran-backed Hezbollah, prompting the UK to deploy additional defense assets including a destroyer, HMS Dragon.
